Top 3 tips for getting started on your first run

Have you ever wanted to start running, but didn't know where to begin? I get it. Running can seem intimidating, especially if you're new to fitness. But it doesn't have to be!

Here are our top three tips for getting started on your first run. These tips are designed to help you start slowly and safely and to make running enjoyable from the start.

Tip 1: Start small, and keep it easy. When just getting started, you always want to finish a run feeling like you could have done more. This will help you avoid injuries and make running more enjoyable.

A good rule of thumb is to start with a walk/jog routine. Walk for a minute or two, then jog for a minute or two. Repeat this for 10-15 minutes, gradually increasing the amount of time you spend jogging as you get stronger.

Tip 2: Set SMART goals!

SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This means that your goals should be clear, easy to track, realistic for your level of fitness, aligned with your overall running goals, and have a specific deadline.

Here are some examples of SMART running goals:

  • Specific: "I will run three times per week."

  • Measurable: "I will track my mileage and time each run."

  • Achievable: "I am currently walking two times per week, for 30 minutes at a time."

  • Relevant: "I want to improve my overall health and fitness."

  • Time-bound: "I will achieve this goal within the next three months."

Setting SMART goals will help you stick with your running program and keep you engaged in your wellness journey.

Tip 3: Think about something you are really good at. Now, think about how good you were on the first try. It's important to remember that you are starting something new, and it's okay if it doesn't feel great your first time out. As you know, these things build on themselves.
